Security is of the utmost importance for any space, but schools, healthcare facilities and businesses must worry about varieties of threats. From ensuring that no one dangerous enters the premises to protecting sensitive spaces within the facility, like waiting rooms and classrooms, it’s important to ensure that security measures are active and operating correctly.

One popular method for enforcing security measures is through the use of identification badges. One of the most troublesome issues with a badge, however, is that they are easily transferrable and can be used repeatedly. This can cause potential breaches in the very security system the badge was intended to provide.

One way to alleviate these concerns is to implement the use of self-expiring identification badges. A self-expiring badge is typically printed with ink that is capable of changing to a different color over a period of time, making it easy to identify which badges are old and which are newly issued. The ink on these cards works through a series of chemical reactions, which can be controlled to determine how long before the cards expire.  There are a variety of time intervals that can be selected for self-expiring badges ranging from a matter of hours to a week.

These kinds of badges can help enhance security in any facility in a multitude of ways. From networking events to visitors in a hospital, these badges can help take the guesswork out of who should have one and who shouldn’t. Security guards will be able to immediately tell if a badge was issued within the appropriate timeframe, or if it has expired. This allows security to allot more attention to more pressing issues as opposed to scanning each and every visitor’s card.

Badges can also be printed with a combination of the color-changing ink and a barcode that can be scanned. This information can help with tracking how many visitors have been issued badges during certain timeframes and, more importantly, it can help track records and data about each visitor.

Security and visitors badges can help identify visitors clearly and easily, especially in buildings where security should be tight.  The implementation of self-expiring badges helps to ramp up security and provide a greater degree of visual security, while eliminating holes in the system such as expired IDs and transferred identities.
